Janal Pixán: a reunion with the souls, Quinto Elemento Spa styl

Autumn in the Riviera Maya invites us to pause, breathe, and remember. In this season, when nature prepares itself for silence and introspection, Tulum celebrates one of its most sacred traditions: Janal Pixán, “food for the souls.”
A celebration that honors the ancestors and reminds us that life is an eternal cycle where everything is connected: body, soul, and earth.

The soul as eternal energy

In the Maya worldview, the soul — or Pixan — is a vital flow of energy given by the gods at birth. It remains with us beyond the physical body and, during these days, it is believed to return to reunite with those who still inhabit this plane.

The Maya envisioned the universe in three levels:
The 13 celestial planes
The Earth where we walk
The 9 planes of the underworld, where energy is transformed

Estos mundos se unen por el árbol sagrado de la Ceiba, símbolo de equilibrio y conexión. En Quinto Elemento Spa, este mismo principio guía nuestros rituales: la unión entre cielo, tierra y espíritu.

Dates of the sacred reunion

  • October 31: U Hanal Palal, the day dedicated to the souls of children.
  • November 1: U Hanal Nucuch Uinicoob, in honor of the adults.

  • November 2: U Hanal Pixanoob, the closing of the cycle, when all souls are honored.

During these days, the communities of Tulum come together in silence, light, and gratitude. Families build altars, prepare offerings, and share moments of introspection and love.

Altars that illuminate the soul

Janal Pixán altars are living spaces where energy is transformed.
Unlike the colorful Day of the Dead traditions of central Mexico, here the connection to the Earth prevails: green Ceiba crosses, gourds, fresh fruit, candles, and the sacred aroma of copal, which purifies and opens the paths.

Each element represents a portal between worlds. Candles guide the return of the ancestors. Water symbolizes purity. Flowers honor the fleeting beauty of life.

At Quinto Elemento Spa, we recreate this spirit in our rituals through aromas, sounds, and natural elements that bring balance to body and soul.

Food for the soul

The name Janal Pixán literally means “food for the souls.”
For this reason, the offering nourishes not only the body, but also the spirit.

Mucbipollo: the most traditional dish, cooked in an underground oven (pib), where fire and earth merge in a sacred act.
Xec: a mixture of citrus fruits and jicama, symbolizing the union of the elements.
Ancestral beverages: such as fresh atole or balché, made with corn and melipona honey, true elixirs of connection with nature.

Each flavor tells a story. Each aroma awakens ancient memories.
The act of preparing and offering is, in itself, a form of meditation.

Celebrating life through calm

For the Maya, death is not an end, but a transition.
Janal Pixán is not a sad celebration, but a tribute to the continuity of the soul.
That is why, in Tulum, music, dance, and spirituality come together in sacred spaces such as the Paseo de las Ánimas, where the community walks with respect and joy.

From Quinto Elemento Spa, we invite you to experience this season from a more intimate perspective: a guided meditation, a copal bath, or a ritual of connection with your ancestors. More than a celebration, it is a return to what is essential.
